Drug Intervention- What is it?

A drug intervention is a process! It is not an event! An intervention is a family- orchestrated attempt to get a loved one who is addicted into treatment. We do not sit down with the addict and talk about her addiction hoping that she jumps up with excitement and accepts help. There is too much pain for the addict to agree to seek help that easily, especially without the team’s preparation. There are too many mal-adaptive beliefs, agreements and attitudes presently controlling and preventing her from seeking help on her own. Sometimes the path to recovery must be illuminated! How do you do that? How do you break through the terrible cycle of addiction and create a way for those in denial to openly admit they need help, or even get those who know they have a problem to go to treatment?
Whether she refuses because she does not think she has a problem, or whether she is just refusing to go to treatment, if she wanted treatment you would not need a drug intervention.  Interventions are used when everything else has failed. Before you can do an intervention, you must first understand what an intervention is, why we do them and how to do them.
